Geotechnical investigations have made substantial progress in the South Galway area over the past months and are due to be completed on site by April 2022.

Irish Drilling Ltd has been appointed to carry out geotechnical investigations in the South Galway area over the coming months.September 2021

Environmental baseline surveys are ongoing in the study area. A geotechnical investigation is scheduled to commence in October.

Site visits have been taking place this month between the design team and those who have expressed an interest in a site based meeting. Environmental baseline surveys are also taking place in the study area.

Galway County Council has now advertised that there will be a further period of consultation (from 28 May to 26 June 2021). A limited number of site meetings may take place in June due to the gradual easing of Covid-19 restrictions, and arrangements are currently being made to set up socially distanced meetings between the design team and those who have expressed an interest in a site based meeting. Requests for site meetings with the design team can be made via the project email address: southgalwayFrs@ryanhanley.ie.

Further Period of Consultation
While the initial consultation period has concluded, there will be a further period of consultation during which meetings can take place on site (see Minister’s Press Release). The timing of the additional period is dependent on the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Galway County Council and the OPW are now presenting the Emerging Preferred Scheme for public consultation. Brochures advertising the consultation have been posted to homes and businesses within the Study Area, however due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the 2021 public consultation is taking place online. Stakeholder consultations have taken place in October and November 2020. It is intended that a public consultation will commence in Q1 2021, with further details to follow.

The Feasibility Study for the scheme is nearing completion and a potential Scheme (potentially environmentally acceptable and cost beneficial) has been identified.
This is the first time a potentially feasible solution has been identified to resolve the flooding issues in the South Galway (Gort Lowlands) area.

The project team will now progress the Options Assessment of the scheme in advance of public consultation, further details of which will be announced.
